Saadi Yousif nació en Basora, Irak, en 1934. Es poeta, ensayista, traductor y editor. Está considerado uno de los más influyentes poetas árabes de la actualidad. Ha publicado 27 libros de poemas desde 1952, entre ellos: The pirate (1952); Stars and ashes (1959); Away from the first sky (1970); Poems of lesser silence (1979); Collected Works (1980); Who knows the rose (1981); Paradise of the forgotten things (1993); All the wine skops of the world (1995) and The tavern of the Thinking Moments (1997). Ha traducido a Walt Whitman, Constantino Kavafis, Federico García Lorca, Giussepe Ungaretti y Wole Soyinka. Es licenciado en Literatura de la Universidad de Bagdad en 1954. Trabajó y viajó ampliamente por el Medio Oriente y Europa. Editor en jefe de Al-Mada, Cultural Quarterly (establecido en 1993). Otras de sus obras son: Diary of the last exile (1984), Thoughts in low voice (selección de ensayos,1987), When in the heights (drama, 1989) y Triangle of the circle (novela, 1994).
